Association of Leading Women Researchers in School of Engineering, Tohoku University

We aim to be a school
Where women can shine
in the field of engineering

In order to realize a truly wealthy society, it is important to respect diversity and to utilize women’s contribution as a part of that diversity.
In FY2013, we established the Association of Leading Women Researchers in Engineering (ALicE) at the Tohoku University, working to realize a fine-tuned level of support for the field of engineering.* With the goal of realizing a society in which women can confidently pursue their careers in engineering, we are continuously implementing activities to support women in research and gender equality.

※ The engineering at Tohoku University is the collective term that encompasses Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Information Sciences, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, International Research Institute of Disaster Science, New Industry Creation Hatchery Center, Environment Conservation Center, and the Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems.

Message

What type of discipline do you consider engineering to be?
Engineering is a discipline that has consistent application in daily life, and can contribute to societal development and carve out new futures, all while channeling truth into science and technology.
Society is also constantly changing, so it is important to have a dream of, “wouldn’t this make the world a better place?” and strive for that. Having such dreams and hopes leads to the realization of that better society, and engineering helps to make those dreams and hopes come true.
Tohoku University’s Association of Leading Women Researchers in Engineering (ALicE) works to realize a society where women can continue their careers in engineering without undue worries.
While various supports and environments have been established in Tohoku University to enable female faculty members and students to be fully active, there are still not many female faculty members and students in the field of engineering. In that sense, we feel that we need to be more proactive in communicating the appeal of engineering and the activities of female students and faculty members.
With the renewal of our website, we have decided to introduce female researchers and students who are active in various research fields in engineering. Tohoku University has a wide range of research fields in engineering, and as a member here you can pursue your research to the fullest.
I look forward to learning, growing, and working together with you at Tohoku University.

Professor TANAKA Mami, Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering/Graduate School of Engineering
Director, ALicE
