Supports by Tohoku University Center for Gender Equality Promotion

There are some programs for the project to promote gender equality and support female researchers, based on the Tohoku University Gender Equality Policy announced in August 2013. Please check the web of Tohoku University Center for Gender Equality Promotion for detail.

Research support staff Grants for the cost of hiring research support staff (maximum grant of 2 million yen/ around 4 applicants will be selected) Female teaching staff or technical staff in the field of natural sciences who are currently bringing up children (children who have yet to reach elementary school starting age) or who expect to give birth within six months of the date of applying for the grant.
Research support staff (shared)

Administrative assistants will be shared between successful applicants (assistants will be dispatched by the Center for Gender Equality Promotion).

Female researchers who work as teaching staff or technical staff in the field of natural sciences who carry out childcare/nursing care or make a social contribution as a member of a national advisory body.

Babysitter grant system

Grants for the cost of using babysitters during research, lectures or field trips (maximum grant of 100,000 yen/ around 20 applicants will be selected)

Usage fees for Keyaki/Hoshinoko childcare center and Hoshinoko Room are ineligible for subsidies.

Teaching staff, technical staff, PD and doctoral students with children.

Start-up research costs Research grants of 1 million yen in the first year and 500,000 yen in the second year (around 5 applicants will be selected) Female teaching staff who have been newly hired between July 2, 2014 and July 1, 2015 (assistant teacher or higher; applicants shall be teaching staff without a fixed term of appointment, or who are eligible under the rules on terms of appointment)
Research skills grant To pay for some of the cost of travel expenses, registration fees, essay proofreading fees, etc. (Meetings held overseas: maximum of 400,000 yen, Meetings held in Japan: maximum of 150,000 yen) Female teaching staff (associate professors, lecturers, assistant teachers)

Science Angels Seminar visits to senior high schools, open campuses, and the planning and implementation of science events Female postgraduate students in the field of natural sciences
Supporting the cost of overseas travel Supporting the cost of overseas travel by female postgraduate students giving presentations at international conferences, etc. (maximum grant of 150,000 yen) female postgraduate students giving presentations at international conferences
